There's nothing quite like the sound of a crackling wood fire. But it takes work. Chopping and stacking wood, building the fire, and keeping it going all takes time. On the upside the wood is paid for before being used so there's no unexpected large power bills which we can all do without. But a wood burning fireplace requires maintenance. The chimney needs sweeping and capping, and cleaning to remove soot and grease. But for all the work required needed to run a wood burner, it sure is nice. The wood burner not only heats your house, some wood burning fireplaces come with a water booster option for heating your water, and some also have cook tops. So all that work running and maintaining your fire can actually pay off by saving you electricity or gas for heating water and cooking.
Push a button, and hello fire. It's that easy. But easiness comes at a price and so does the cost of running a gas fireplace. There are three different types of gas fireplaces, direct vented (through the wall or roof), top vented (which needs a chimney or vent) and vent less. Gas fires can run from a gas main or an LPG bottle, making the latter option a manageable cost.
Electric fire places are probably the easiest of fireplace heating options. Buy one, plug it in anywhere, and you get instant heat. Like gas fireplaces they are costly to run but they're a great option for apartments as there's no need for a chimney or vent. Panel heaters provide heating in specific places and are a good option for heating a room. They don't have a flame, but they do keep you warm.
